So, can stolen crypto be traced through mixers? Sometimes, but not with certainty. Mixers such as Tornado Cash are designed to break the visible link between the wallet that deposits funds and the wallet that withdraws them. That makes crypto transaction tracing harder and its conclusions less definite. They do not erase the blockchain record, though. What an investigation can establish depends on the blockchain, the mixer’s design, the transaction data available and the other evidence investigators can combine with it. Even a strong analysis shows where funds likely went. It does not automatically identify who is responsible or return the money.
What Is a Crypto Mixer and How Does Tornado Cash Work?
A crypto mixer pools funds from many users so that outgoing payments are harder to match with specific incoming ones. Some mixers are run by a company that takes custody of funds. Others are software.
Tornado Cash is the best-known example of the second type: smart contracts on Ethereum and compatible networks. Users deposit fixed amounts into a pool and later withdraw to a different address. A cryptographic proof shows that a valid deposit exists without revealing which one. The more users in a pool, the larger its “anonymity set” and the less certain any match.
Its legal position has shifted. In November 2024, the U.S. Fifth Circuit held that Tornado Cash’s immutable smart contracts were not “property” the Treasury could sanction, and Treasury removed the sanctions in March 2025. Criminal proceedings against its developers continue. Roman Storm was convicted in August 2025 of conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business, and his retrial on the unresolved charges is currently set for April 2027. Rules also differ by country.
Can Investigators Trace Stolen Crypto After It Passes Through a Mixer?
Even when the direct link is hidden, the surrounding activity is public. Investigators look at transaction timing and amounts, pool size at the time, address reuse, how withdrawal wallets were funded, and what happens before the deposit and after the withdrawal, especially if funds reach an exchange. University of Zurich researchers who studied Tornado Cash across several networks reported that heuristics of this kind could link a meaningful share of withdrawals to deposits. Privacy in practice is therefore imperfect.
These links are usually probabilistic, however. Many cannot be resolved, and a match is a lead to test against other evidence, not proof. Three things should be kept apart:
- Transaction tracing shows where funds likely moved.
- Attribution identifies who controls a wallet. This generally needs off-chain evidence, such as exchange account records obtained through legal process.
- Recovery is a separate step that tracing alone does not achieve.
What Makes Crypto Mixers Difficult to Investigate?
At a high level, the main challenges are:
- Reduced visibility: no direct on-chain link between a specific deposit and a specific withdrawal.
- Many transactions and addresses: funds may be split and moved through new wallets, creating many possible paths.
- Cross-service and cross-chain movement: swaps, bridges and multiple networks spread the records across several systems.
- Limited identity data: addresses are pseudonymous, and nothing on-chain ties them to a real-world identity.
What Should You Do If Stolen Crypto Has Passed Through a Mixer?
Acting early preserves evidence:
- Preserve transaction hashes and wallet addresses.
- Record the cryptocurrency, blockchain network, amounts and timestamps.
- Save messages, screenshots and other evidence of the original scam.
- Document known transactions before and after the funds entered the mixer.
- Contact any exchange or service that may have received the funds and ask it to review the activity.
- Report the incident to the appropriate authorities. Our guide on how to report a crypto scam explains where.
- Consider professional crypto tracing assistance.
Never share private keys, seed phrases or passwords with anyone claiming they can investigate or recover your funds. Genuine investigators do not need them. See how to avoid crypto recovery scams.
Can Stolen Crypto Be Recovered After Passing Through a Mixer?
Tracing is not recovery. Tracing documents movement. Recovery needs further action, such as an exchange freezing an account, a court order or law enforcement seizure. Whether any of that is possible depends on the circumstances, the evidence, whether funds reached a regulated service, applicable law and the cooperation of the parties involved. If funds were withdrawn to a wallet no one can compel, options may be limited. Tracing does not guarantee asset freezing, identification or recovery. Our explainer on crypto asset recovery vs. tracing covers the distinction.
When Should You Consider a Professional Crypto Investigation?
Consider one when the loss is significant, the funds crossed multiple wallets or services, or you need organized records for lawyers, an exchange or police. A professional review can organize transaction records, examine relevant blockchain activity, document findings and support further investigative or legal steps.
FintechLegals’ Crypto Assets Tracing service follows the movement of funds across wallets. Its Crypto Investigation service examines the wider evidence behind suspected fraud or theft.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Tornado Cash make cryptocurrency transactions untraceable?
No. It is designed to obscure the link between deposits and withdrawals, but the blockchain records remain. Investigators can analyze timing, patterns and surrounding activity, though results are often probabilistic and some transactions cannot be linked with confidence.
Can stolen Bitcoin be traced after passing through a mixer?
Sometimes, depending on the method used. Tornado Cash runs on Ethereum-compatible networks, not Bitcoin, so Bitcoin must be swapped or routed differently first. Some movement may be followed, but conclusions can be uncertain. See can you trace stolen Bitcoin.
Can investigators identify the person behind a mixer transaction?
Sometimes, but not from the blockchain alone. Analysis may produce leads, such as a wallet reaching an exchange. Establishing who controls it generally requires off-chain evidence, such as account records obtained through legal process, and may not be possible.
Does tracing cryptocurrency through a mixer guarantee recovery?
No. Tracing documents where funds went. Recovery depends on whether funds can be located at a cooperating service, on legal action and on law enforcement involvement. Treat anyone who guarantees recovery with caution.
